Recycling Group Notes:
What We're Doing Now:
On Openbuild Days:
- Check bin surface for misplaced/ missorted materials
- Remove full gaylords, replace with empties
- Check teardown shelf for miscellany to be torn down/ sort for recycle
- (if not a lot of volunteers) go through build area for loose cards/ other recyclables
Weekly:
- Check stock of gaylords, pallets, shrink wrap for palletizing
Quarterly:
- Go through full gaylords and re-sort into empties. Remove CPUs and other leftover parts, batteries, aluminum from PCBs; ensure proper plastic sorting; remove anything misplaced.
On Recycling Days:
- Get gaylords onto elevator onto truck
- Put out new gaylords and pallets
- Procure a truck
- Drive the truck to our chosen recyclers
- Contact recyclers to warn them of our coming
- Pallet jack it up there!
What We Need To Do (New Tasks):
- Make a special place for aluminum
- Have a formal printer triage/ recycling/ sales process
On Open Build Days:
- remove PCBs from HDDs
- Sort and triage printers
- Strip wire (need stripping tools)
Each Month:
What we're not sure of:
- Processing Junk:
- How do we process paper and cardboard?
- How do we process CDs and floppies, and VHS(!)?
- Can we sell aluminum?
- IDE Cables:
- How do we sort them?
- How do we process them?
- do we strip?
- break off connectors?
- PCBs:
- Can we sell them?
- Which local recyclers buy PCBs?
- Are these recyclers environmentally friendly?
- Do they need us to sort stuff in specific ways different than we sort now?
- Are HDD PCBs more valuable than other PCBs?
- Should we separate HDD PCBs?
- Are CPUs and memory more valuable than other PCBs?
- How do we need to process/ sort plastic differently for our chosen plastic recycler?
